Many homeowners today are spending a great deal of money on decorating and adding functionality to the outdoor spaces on their property. This is being done essentially for two reasons, both of which are based on economics. The value of homes has been dropping steeply over the last few years and there are people who have lost as much as 50% of the value of their homes. People are spending money, even in a bad economy, trying to increase the value of your home to get back some of their initial investment. If you are careful you can increase the value of your home by about $5000 for every $2500 you spend on improvements. This is a quick way to double your money and if you take the time to do so, it will hold this additional value when home prices start to go up again.
The other reason is that because of the bad economy people do not want to spend money on expensive vacations. A trip to the other coast for a family of four can cost as much as $ 2,000 for transportation alone. That same $2,000 spent for a large garden gazebo kit or patio cover will not only give a place to spend the summer and relax but will add value to your home as well. When vacations are over, you may have some photos from memories, but when you add features to your property they will continue to hold value and make you money.
Another good idea would be to purchase an above ground swimming pool and maybe add one of those swimming pool heaters to your existing central heating system. This way you will be able to enjoy some fun swimming and splashing with your loved ones even in those late spring days when the air is still crispy.
Now you have increased the value of your home and by adding a place to spend the summer you have saved money you would have spent on expensive vacations.
